It is the middle option between repair and replacement, it costs a fraction of a full rebuild, and it only works if the structure underneath is genuinely sound. It is also the natural moment to switch from wood to composite, since the labour is being spent either way.
What are the warning signs a deck is unsafe?
Any movement where the deck meets the house, a railing that moves when you lean on it, bouncy or sagging boards underfoot, rust at the joist hangers, and soft wood at post bases or anywhere water sits. Movement at the ledger is the one to act on immediately — that connection failing is the most common cause of deck collapse.
Why do decks fail faster in La Jolla?
Salt air, and it goes for the metal first. Standard galvanised joist hangers, ledger bolts and screws within reach of ocean spray can corrode in a handful of years, long before the lumber looks bad — so a deck can be structurally compromised while the surface still looks fine.
